Because of the competition of railroad industries, farming suffered a heavy toll. Farmers weren't able to meet the prices of the railways sometimes. The demand for products was too was too high as well, resulting in inflation of produce and other farmed goods. It was difficult for farmers to sell their products for a profit and be able to feed their families.

Lobbying was very present during the Gilded Age society. Big railway, oil, and steel companies would lobby for politics so that business would go their way. Many politicians themselves owned railways so they would vote on bills that benefited themselves.

Carnegie did the same thing for steel that Rockefeller did for oil. Carnegie, though, was more honest in his work. He also allowed there to be more competition when he could have easily run them out of business. He disliked unions, and crushed the strike resistance at the Homestead Steel Plant.
